The York football team will have no shortage of quality competition this fall.
Coach Don Gelsomino’s squad has six opponents on its 2026 schedule that made the IHSA state playoffs last year, including a pair of teams in Nazareth Academy and Downers Grove North that reached the state semifinals in their respective classes.
York, which went 6-4 last year and made the Class 8A playoffs, opens action on Friday, Aug. 21 at home against Glenbrook South (7:30 p.m. kickoff). Glenbrook South finished 8-3 last year and made it to the second round of the Class 8A playoffs. South also took second in the Central Suburban League South Division. South downed York 35-28 in the season opener last year.
The Dukes then head to La Grange Park on Friday, Aug. 28 (7:30 p.m. start) for another non-conference game against Nazareth Academy. Naz went 11-2 last year, won the Chicago Catholic League/East Suburban Catholic Conference Green Division and reached the Class 6A state semifinals.
York opens West Suburban Conference Silver Division action on Friday, Sept. 4 (7:30 p.m.) in Hillside against Proviso West, which went 1-8 last year. The Dukes then return home on Friday, Sept. 11 (7 p.m.) start for their final out-of-conference game and lone WSC crossover against Leyden. The Eagles were 4-5 a year ago. York defeated Leyden 56-0 last season.
York returns to WSC Silver action on Friday, Sept. 18 (7:30 p.m.) in Oak Park against Oak Park-River Forest. OPRF went 2-7 in 2025.
York hosts Hinsdale Central on Friday, Sept. 25 (7:30 p.m.) and also welcomes Downers Grove North to town on Friday, Oct. 2 (7:30 p.m.). Hinsdale Central was 7-4 last year and reached the second round of the Class 8A playoffs, while Downers Grove North went 10-3 and advanced to the Class 7A state semifinals.
York heads to Glen Ellyn on Saturday, Oct. 10 for a 1:30 p.m. matinee game against Glenbard West before closing the regular season on Friday, Oct. 16 at home (7:30 p.m. start) against Lyons Township.
Glenbard West (9-2 a year ago) won the WSC Silver title last year and advanced to the second round of the Class 7A playoffs, while Lyons Township went 8-3 and advanced to the second round of the Class 8A playoffs.
York was 4-2 in WSC Silver play last year and allowed the third-fewest points out of the seven conference teams. York scored conference wins against Proviso West (49-14), Hinsdale Central (28-18), Glenbard West (21-20) and Oak Park-River Forest (34-11), while losing league games to Downers North (41-28) and Lyons Township (34-26). York also lost to Lyons (24-21) in the first round of the state playoffs.
Three of York’s four losses last year were by eight or less points.
