Charlie Connor, a York High School student and member of Scouting America Three Fires Council Troop 117B in Elmhurst, has completed his Eagle Scout service project by installing new musical playground elements at El Valor’s Carlos Cantu Children’s Center in Chicago.
Connor and his team of volunteers installed four musical elements, including a 6-foot metal xylophone and a steel drum.
To achieve the Eagle Scout rank—Scouting America's highest honor—Scouts must lead a service project that substantially benefits a local community organization. Connor consulted with professional engineers to ensure the playground infrastructure was safe, accessible, and built to last.
Connor chose this specific project because of his love of music and interest in the field of engineering.
"I wanted the children to be able to explore music through play," said Connor. "Not every community has access to these resources, so installing these instruments brings the kids a completely new experience."
The six-month project required intensive fundraising and community support, totaling over 400 volunteer hours. Connor raised more than $6,000 for equipment and materials by launching a project website, leveraging social media, and going door-to-door to gain sponsorships from 17 local Elmhurst businesses.
A trombone player, Connor also hosted a successful "Oktoberfest in May" fundraiser at Bethel UCC in Elmhurst, featuring York High School Polka band, a DJ, traditional food, and a silent auction.
Connor said, “It was a lot of work, both physically and mentally to get everything just right. I got to visit the school and see the children so happy while playing and making noises with the instruments and it was the best feeling knowing I was able to bring that to them. Getting the help of so many people with donations and labor felt amazing as well.”
El Valor released the following statement, extending its deepest gratitude to Connor and all the supporters who made this project possible:
“Thanks to their dedication, the outdoor space is now transformed, giving the children a wonderful new way to play, explore, and make music together”
