Girls flag football is the newest sport at IC Catholic Prep.
The Knights, under the direction of coach Sean McMillen, have a 15-game schedule this fall with nine of those contests hosted at Lewis Stadium at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst.
“Our roster is made up of athletes who are learning and developing within the sport while bringing experience from other athletic backgrounds,” McMillen said. “We’re extremely excited about launching the program and giving our athletes the opportunity to compete in a rapidly growing sport.”
McMillen noted that because it is ICCP’s first season, one of its biggest priorities will be establishing the foundation of the program. “Learning the game, developing chemistry, understanding our offensive and defensive systems and building a competitive culture.”
McMillen is thrilled the Knights have a group of talented and athletic players, “who are eager to learn and compete,” he said. “While we obviously don’t have the benefit of previous-season experience as a team, we believe our athletes’ athletic ability, competitiveness and willingness to learn will allow us to improve quickly throughout the season.”
The coach added the program’s expectations are to compete hard in every game, continue developing throughout the season and establish a strong foundation that future teams can build upon.
“We also want our players to have fun, represent our school well and help grow the sport within our community,” McMillen said. “Since this is our inaugural season, every game will be an opportunity to learn and establish what we want this program to become. We’re excited to see how quickly the team develops once we get into game situations and gain experience together.”
The Knights hosted Chicago Mother McAuley and Joliet Catholic Academy earlier this week and will face Timothy Christian tonight at 6 p.m. at Lewis Stadium before welcoming Aurora Central Catholic to town Saturday for a 10 a.m. contest.
