Business Spotlight: New mural celebrates Elmhurst’s landmarks and community spirit

Posted

Visitors to the George F. Hammersmith Sr. Community Room at Community Bank of Elmhurst will notice a vibrant new addition that reflects the city’s character while honoring the bank’s deep local roots.

The south wall of the community room now features a large-scale digital map of Elmhurst created by artist Julie Woertz and installed by Tree Towns Imaging and Color Graphics.

The artwork replaced a painted mural that had become dated, giving the space a fresh centerpiece after several weeks of planning and production. The completed project was unveiled during a reception June 25.

The map offers a creative perspective on the city. Because Elmhurst is long and narrow from north to south while the wall is wide and horizontal, the artist rotated the city’s orientation, placing north on the far right. The result allows the entire community to be displayed across one expansive wall.

The mural highlights many of Elmhurst’s recognizable landmarks, from the quarry and the York Theatre to Elmhurst University, City Hall and numerous other local destinations.

Positioned directly across from Community Bank of Elmhurst’s Business Zone, the artwork is easy for visitors to view.

The community room is named for George F. Hammersmith Sr., a founder of Community Bank of Elmhurst in 1993, whose commitment to Elmhurst helped shape the bank’s community-focused mission. He died in 2004, but his legacy continues through the space that bears his name.

The new artwork reflects Community Bank of Elmhurst’s ongoing connection to the city it serves. More than decorative, it celebrates the places, history and shared pride that make Elmhurst unique.

Community Bank of Elmhurst invites residents to stop by, view the mural and experience a colorful tribute to the community it proudly calls home.
