This summer, PALS Programs will return to Elmhurst University from July 26-Aug. 1, continuing its mission of creating transformative inclusive camp experiences that bring together individuals with and without Down syndrome through connection, adventure and belonging.

Founded in 2004, PALS Programs creates inclusive camp experiences for people with and without Down syndrome through a volunteer-led model centered on one-to-one peer pairings between similarly aged participants. Each pair is placed on a small team led by volunteer leaders, creating an immersive environment where campers live together in university residence halls, participate in on-campus activities, explore local attractions and build meaningful friendships.

This summer, 60 peer volunteers and 60 participants with Down syndrome will spend seven days and six nights together at Elmhurst University, experiencing the best of the Chicago area while learning more about themselves and one another through shared experiences.

Throughout the week, participants will enjoy a variety of adventures designed to foster independence, confidence and connection.

Highlights Include:

  • A day at the Chicago Yacht Club, one of PALS Programs' longtime community partnerships, where Participants will enjoy swimming, spend time aboard members' boats, and experience a memorable day on the water.
  • An adventure at The Forge: Lemont Quarries Adventure Park, where participants will challenge themselves on zip lines, ropes courses, giant swings, climbing towers, and other outdoor adventure activities designed to build confidence, courage and teamwork.
  • Participation in PALS Programs' signature initiative, The Congratulations Project, where adults with Down syndrome write letters to new and expecting parents receiving a Down syndrome diagnosis for their child, offering hope, encouragement, and a firsthand perspective on the joy and possibilities that lie ahead.

These experiences encourage Participants to step outside their comfort zones, build confidence, foster independence, and develop meaningful relationships that extend well beyond camp.

PALS Programs remains committed to fostering a culture of inclusion where all individuals are valued, empowered, and encouraged to form authentic relationships across perceived differences.
