‘Dukes of Every Decade Unite!’

Homecoming 2026 celebration brings York alumni together across generations

Posted

Homecoming 2026 is now part of York history, and the "Dukes of Every Decade Unite!" celebration proved to be an unforgettable success.

Hosted by Class of 1981 alumni Dave and Diane Armstrong, the event at Stage 119 brought together York graduates from multiple generations. Attendance more than doubled expectations, with alumni traveling from across the country and beyond, including Lisa Neubauer Maurus from Switzerland.

The event was especially meaningful because of the organizers' own story. Dave and Diane reconnected at their 40th class reunion and married a year later. Inspired by their experience, they created an event that welcomed all York Dukes to reconnect and celebrate their shared history.

The weekend began with a special York tour led by longtime historian and Alumni Association committee member Jim Driscoll, whose passion for preserving York traditions captivated attendees. York curator Debbie Linhart was also recognized for her dedication to documenting the school's rich history for future generations.

Guests enjoyed a live trumpet performance of When the Saints Go Marching In as they arrived. One of the evening's highlights was a video presentation created by Dave Armstrong, beginning with images from York's 1922 and 1923 yearbooks and taking attendees on a journey through more than a century of Duke history.

The York Alumni Association was on hand selling T-shirts and memorabilia, raising funds to support its mission of preserving York traditions. A memorabilia display featured vintage yearbooks from 1922, 1923, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1983, 1984, and 1989, along with Dave Armstrong's letter jacket, track-and-field discus, cheerleading apparel, and other treasured artifacts.

Other highlights included a 20-question York trivia contest, a memorial table honoring classmates who have passed away, and a moment of silence before the evening concluded with the song, “Proud to Be an American.”

Friday night's Homecoming game and halftime performances by the York marching band, cheerleaders, pom-pom squad, and flag team provided another opportunity for alumni to celebrate their Duke pride.

"The event at Stage 119 was the perfect venue for this unique gathering," said Diane Armstrong. "The space was wonderful, the food was outstanding, and the staff were exceptional."

Organizers thanked their many volunteers, including AMJ Spectacular Events for decorations and setup assistance. Prize donations from Modern Plate, Stage 119, Ella's Italian Pub, Roberto's Pizza, and Cooper's Hawk Winery added to the fun, while Diane M. Karpman-Armstrong of Coldwell Banker Realty sponsored the professional DJ. Even the hula hoop contest became a crowd favorite.

Perhaps the greatest success of the evening was the genuine connection among attendees. Phones remained tucked away as classmates shared stories, exchanged contact information and renewed friendships. Many stayed until the very end, reluctant to leave.

The enthusiasm has already sparked conversations about future gatherings. As one attendee noted, staying connected shouldn't have to wait for a milestone reunion.

For one remarkable evening, decades disappeared, old friendships were renewed and new memories were made. Homecoming 2026 proved once again that no matter where life takes them, York Dukes remain connected by a bond that lasts a lifetime.
